Mario Gomez performance ladder going down
Mario Gomez was once the most feared striker in Germany after completing a £ 25 million move from Stuttgart to Bayern Munich. In recent years, however, he has fallen down the ladder and he is now playing for Italian outfit Fiorentina.
Fiorentina appeared to have secured a great striker in the form of Gomez when they signed him in 2013. However, several injury problems and a loss of form has seen him score only one goal in the last 13 matches. He failed to improve on this statistic after failing to convert from the penalty spot against Parma.
Fiorentina manager Vincenzo Montella was a disappointed man after seeing his team suffered a 1-0 defeat against Parma. This has hurt his team’s chances of closing the gap on the teams chasing for the top three positions like Napoli and Lazio.
Montella says that Fiorentina could have at least secure a point had they converted the penalty. Gomez is in danger of losing his starting spot after the manager admitted that the 29-year-old is a shadow of his former self. Gomez was not included in the 2014 World Cup squad for Germany, who went on to lift the title. He is unlikely to reclaim this spot in the national team showed his form fails to recover.
“Gomez? We are commenting on the usual things and unfortunately a mistake can happen. We have faith and will support him. He’s a player who has lost his way and needs to find himself in front of goal.My evaluation was global. Neto wasn’t focused and that was inevitable in the circumstances. He remains a great goalkeeper, but at this moment I thought Tatarusanu was more reliable. Is this a definitive decision? I think this is the route we are taking, yes,” said Montella about Gomez and goalkeeper Neto.
