HIGH HOPES
Fiorentina have received a major boost in their hopes of qualifying for the top three of the Italian Serie A with the news that star striker Mario Gomez could be back in the next three weeks. The striker suffered an injury at the start of the season, which was expected to rule him out for up to 7 weeks. The German international moved to Fiorentina only in the summer in search of regular football, and he comes after having won the Champions League in the summer. The presence of such a quality striker along with Giuseppe Rossi boosted the chances of Fiorentina qualifying for the Champions league next season.
However, the 27-year-old suffered an injury at a crucial stage in the season. It has proven to be not a great factor for Fiorentina, as they have been able to get 12 points from their opening seven matches of the season, but they are without a victory in the last three matches. They have also won only one encounter in the last five. This disappointing run of form has threatened to destroy their hopes of a top three finish, but Doctor Paolo Manetti has said that the striker will soon be ready for action.
It is expected that Gomez will be involved when Fiorentina face Milan in the first week of November.
“There have been numerous news stories predicting variable recovery times for Gomez. We confirm the original estimate of six to seven weeks. His recovery is going very well and today Mario had a double check-up with both our consultant and in Munich. The tear has healed, so now it is a matter of slowly starting specific training without putting too much stress on the area. He won’t be able to work on the pitch just yet, as that will be possible next week,” said Manetti.
