17 POINTS CLEAR

The Bayern Munich striker Mario Gomez has helped his team to 17 points clear at the top of the table with his goal against Hoffenheim. Bayern Munich were coming into the weekend’s match against Hoffenheim on the back of a spectacular run of form, which has seen them lose only once this season.

The team has also conceded just eight goals in 24 league matches. This has allowed them to open a massive advantage at the top of the table over second placed Borussia Dortmund. They are on course to lift the Bundesliga title a few months before the end of the campaign itself.

However, they were unable to exert their full influence of the match against Hoffenheim last weekend. It was not until a goal from Mario Gomez that three points became available for Heynckes and his men. The goal by the former Stuttgart striker in the 38th minute helped Bayern Munich improve their lead over Borussia Dortmund, who also managed to win their match in hand. Bayern now have shorter odds of winning the Championship than Manchester United winning the Premier League!?

After missing the start of the season through an injury, Gomez has found it difficult to get back into the first-team. The manager has been giving the 26-year-old Mandžukić opportunities in the first-team. As a result, Gomez has made just one appearances in this campaign. He has managed to score six goals in these matches.

As a result of the lack of first-team action, there have been reports that Gomez will be requesting a transfer in the summer. The 27-year-old has been linked with the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City. It has also been rumoured that Bayern will be interested in the Atletico Madrid striker Radamel Falcao in the summer when Guardiola arrives at the club. Gomez, though, recently stated that he was happy at the German club and that he is not looking for a move.
