GOMEZ vs KLOSE

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

With the much anticipated Euro 2012 fast approaching, there has been a lot of tension between Miroslav Klose and Mario Gomez. The two strikers have been in excellent form for the club, which has promoted talk that they will be facing intense competition between each other.

However, Maria Gomez has been quick to point out that the competition talk between the two is nothing more than media play and that they both complement each other pretty well. He also said that the competition between the two, if there is any, will be beneficial to the German national team.

Germany have been using the 4-5-1 formation for many years now. In such a formation, it would be tough to see both Mario Gomez and Miroslav Klose playing in the same team. However, it is extremely tough to drop Miroslav Klose given the way he has been playing in the last few years, despite his age. Mario Gomez, on the other hand, has been distinctly better at club level than at international level. This has promoted the competition between the two, but Mario Gomez has downplayed any such competition between the two. “I’m delighted for him. It wasn’t easy for him at Bayern, so it’s wonderful for him now, because I know how important goals are for a striker. And I think he still has a vital role to play, both for his club and his country,” Mario Gomez said regarding Miroslav Klose.

Miroslav Klose has been a revelation in Italy. Lazio have been doing extremely well since Miroslav Klose moved to Italy after struggling to break through into the Bayern Munich team, which was performing exceptionally well with Mario Gomez up front. Even this season, Mario Gomez has been in sensational form. So far, Mario Gomez has scored a total of 21 goals in all competitions.

GOMEZ: I’M NO MESSI

Monday, December 5th, 2011

Bayern Munich striker Mario Gomez has said that he would never compare himself with Barcelona striker Lionel Messi. Lionel Messi is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in the world. However, Mario Gomez has been more or less on par with the Argentine in terms of the number of goals scored and number of goals created. He has been one of the vital players for Bayern Munich this season. Even though Bayern Munich have had a dip in form recently, Mario Gomez has been instrumental and is on course towards creating a new record when it comes to scoring in the Bundesliga.

However, the German striker has avoided comparisons with him and Lionel Messi saying that Lionel Messi is an extraordinary player when compared to him. Former Bayern Munich manager was the first one to compare Mario Gomez with Lionel Messi. However, Mario Gomez has been quick to dismiss such suggestions. In a recent interview, Gomez said, “He’s flattering me, of course. No current player stands in comparison with Messi. He’s unique, and comfortably the best player in the world. I’m aware that Ottmar Hitzfeld isn’t just any old commentator, he’s a celebrated and successful coach, so I’m certainly proud if that’s what he said.”

So far, Mario Gomez has been in a goal scoring rush. He has got 21 goals in all competitions for Bayern Munich this season. Even though he cannot be compared with Lionel Messi, it is fair to say that Mario Gomez is as important to Bayern Munich as Lionel Messi is important to Barcelona. Despite avoiding comparisons, Gomez said that he is having a lot of confidence going into the matches and that one can expect him to score many more goals in the future.

Hitzfeld speaks of Gomez importance

Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

Current Switzerland coach and former Bayern Munich manager Ottmar Hitzfeld has said that Bayern Munich striker Mario Gomez is extremely important to Bayern Munich. In fact, he went one step ahead by saying that he could be on par with the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in terms of his importance to the club.

Mario Gomez has been one of the important players for Bayern Munich this season and has played well so far this season with an impressive 12 league goals so far. However, Hitzfeld says that he is not only important for the number of goals he has scored, but also for the importance, he provides in linking up play.

Bayern Munich have made an excellent start to this season, though their form has tailed off a little in recent matches. So far, Mario Gomez has scored 20 goals in just 18 matches for Bayern Munich, which is nothing short of brilliant. In fact, he is in the running, along with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, for the European Golden Boot.

Hitzfeld has recognised the fact that Mario Gomez not only scores goals, but also works incredibly hard for the team. In a recent interview, Ottmar Hitzfeld said “In principle, of course, it is difficult to compare the three as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are individualists who often do things alone and sometimes play off two or three players. However, Gomez is more the executioner but he is world-class. In his category, as top scorer, he need not be fearful of any comparison.”

It is not surprising to see that Hitzfeld has heaped praise for the Bayern Munich hitman. Gomez is very much on course to beat the record set by Gerd Mueller for the most number of Bundesliga goals.

Mario Gomez Biography

Thursday, October 20th, 2011

Mario Gomez is the German international who currently plays for Bundesliga side Bayern Munich. He is regarded as one of the finest strikers for Germany at the moment, and he is also regarded as the natural successor for Miroslav Klose. Mario Gomez has represented various youth teams during his childhood, but it was with VFB Stuttgart where his career began.

Mario Gomez started training with the Stuttgart youth academy from 2001 onwards and it did not take long for him to make the step up into the first-team. Aged just 19 years, Mario Gomez made his debut in a Champions League match against English Premier League side Chelsea. His Bundesliga debut came a few weeks later. They were the first and only appearances that he made during the 2003-04 season. However, it did not take long for Mario Gomez to become an established player at Stuttgart.

From the 2004-05 pre-season onwards, Mario Gomez had become more or less a regular starter for the German side. It was in the season that he crossed 20 appearances in the season. At the end of the 2004-05 season, Mario Gomez had made 24 appearances for Stuttgart second division side in all competitions and scored an impressive 16 goals. This talent did not go unnoticed as he was linked with a number of other clubs during the transfer window.

Soon, Mario Gomez was promoted to the proper first-team in the 2005-06 season, during which he made 38 appearances in total. Even though they scored only eight goals in the season, he had contributed massively to the team. From then on in, there was no looking back for Mario Gomez, who continuously made more than 30 appearances in the subsequent seasons. However, most important was his ability to score goals, which was demonstrated by his final season at Stuttgart.
In the 2008-09 season, Mario Gomez scored a very impressive 33 goals from a total of 44 appearances in all competitions. This made him subject to transfer rumours to some of the elite clubs in Europe, which also included German side Bayern Munich. After plenty of negotiations, Mario Gomez left Stuttgart for Bayern Munich for a reported transfer fee believed to be in the region of more than € 30 million. It made him one of the most expensive German players of that time.

Mario Gomez did not allow the huge transfer fee to become a huge burden, as they continue to score goals for Bayern Munich just as he did for Stuttgart. In his first season with the German giant, Mario Gomez scored 14 goals in 45 appearances, but that ratio improved dramatically the next season as he scored 39 goals in 45 appearances.

So far, he has won the Bundesliga title with Stuttgart and Bayern Munich, while he has also won the DFB-Pokal with Bayern Munich. Internationally, he made his debut for the German national team in 2007 and has represented them in almost 50 appearances in various competitions including the World Cup.
